Best Isekai Anime: The Complete Guide (Every Type Covered)

Isekai is the most exhausted genre in anime right now and also the one with the highest ceiling. When it works — Re:Zero, Mushoku Tensei, Lord of Mysteries — it works like nothing else. When it doesn’t, you’ve seen it before within the first five minutes. This guide cuts through it.

I’ve watched isekai anime since before the genre had a name. I know which ones are worth your time and which ones are the same premise with a different hat. Everything here is a genuine recommendation.

The Best Isekai Anime — My Personal Tier

S-Tier: The ones that changed what isekai can be

Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation — The most carefully built isekai world in anime. Rudeus actually grows as a person over three seasons. Studio Bind treats every scene with a production quality that makes most other isekai look cheap. If you only watch one, watch this.

Re:ZERO − Starting Life in Another World — The most emotionally intense isekai ever made. Subaru’s “Return by Death” ability sounds like a power fantasy and is instead used to systematically destroy him. Season 3 delivered the war arc fans waited years for. White Fox still delivers.

Lord of Mysteries (2025) — Victorian setting, Lovecraftian horror, tarot-based powers. A Chinese donghua that outclassed most Japanese isekai in 2025. Dense, atmospheric, and unlike anything else on Crunchyroll. The best new isekai in years.

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End — Technically more fantasy quest than isekai, but the audience for this genre needs to watch it. An elven mage reflecting on centuries of companionship after her human friends die. Anime of the Year 2023. Nothing sounds like it.

A-Tier: Excellent, watch all of them

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime — Nation-building isekai that takes its world seriously. Rimuru is genuinely likable. Season 4 is airing in 2026.
The Eminence in Shadow — The best isekai comedy in years. Cid’s delusion being real is a joke that never stops paying off.
Overlord — Ainz Ooal Gown running an evil empire while being confused by everything. Uniquely dark.
No Game No Life — Brilliant. Needs a Season 2 that will never come. Watch it anyway.
Konosuba — The isekai parody that became genuinely beloved on its own merits. Aqua is the funniest character in the genre.

B-Tier: Good, pick based on your taste

Solo Leveling, Rising of the Shield Hero Season 1, Sword Art Online Season 1, Cautious Hero, Ascendance of a Bookworm, By the Grace of the Gods, Campfire Cooking in Another World, Reincarnated as a Sword.

Best Isekai by Subgenre

Best dark / psychological isekai

  • Re:ZERO — emotional damage guaranteed
  • Overlord — from the villain’s perspective
  • Saga of Tanya the Evil — military isekai, genuinely chilling protagonist
  • Made in Abyss — not traditional isekai but the audience overlaps

Best relaxing / slow-life isekai

  • Campfire Cooking in Another World — perfect comfort watch
  • By the Grace of the Gods — genuinely warm, zero stakes
  • Slime Diaries — Rimuru’s slice-of-life spinoff, exactly what it sounds like
  • Ascendance of a Bookworm — books, printing, medieval social climbing

Best OP MC isekai

  • Mushoku Tensei — OP but earned through training
  • The Eminence in Shadow — OP as a running gag
  • Solo Leveling — OP as a power fantasy done right
  • Overlord — OP and lonely about it

Best isekai villainess anime

  • My Next Life as a Villainess — the original, still the best
  • I’m the Villainess, So I’m Taming the Final Boss — surprising depth
  • Though I Am an Inept Villainess — Summer 2026, body swap premise

Isekai to Avoid (My Honest Blacklist)

These are technically isekai that I think are either bad or massively overrated:

  • Arifureta Season 1 — Generic power fantasy with no charm. Season 2 is better somehow.
  • The Master of Ragnarok — Genuinely one of the worst isekai ever animated.
  • In Another World With My Smartphone — The show that inspired a thousand “smartphone isekai” that were all better than the original.
