On January 11, 2024, they officially announced the Touhai Ura Rate Mahjong Touhai Roku anime TV series, and it’s scheduled to premiere in 2024. The show is based on a manga with the same name, recognized for its engaging depiction of underworld mahjong gambling.
East Fish Studio is producing it, and Jun Hatori is directing, with Mariko Kunisawa handling the series scripts, Sayaka Anesaki designing the characters, and Yūsuke Shirato and Yuki Kishida working on the music.
Touhai Ura Rate Mahjong Touhai Roku is an upcoming gambling anime of 2024 full of suspense and drama, exploring psychological and strategic gameplay. The story revolves around Kei, a high school boy secretly known as one of the city’s most skilled and ruthless Mahjong players. Despite his quiet nature, Kei’s keen observation skills, strong determination, and game expertise help him navigate a world filled with powerful and dangerous characters. Currently, Kei is protecting Amina, an illegal immigrant, from deportation. His days involve sleeping through class, while his nights are spent playing high-stakes Mahjong, awaiting a formidable opponent.
The original manga, created by Koji Shinasaka, was serialized in Akita Shoten’s Young Champion magazine from June 27, 2006, to April 12, 2011, spanning twelve tankōbon volumes. The sequel, Tohai Hitobashira-hen, continued in the same magazine from May 10, 2011, to May 23, 2017, with sixteen volumes. The third series, Tohai Minagoroshi-hen, followed from September 26, 2017, to June 8, 2021, accumulating ten volumes. The latest installment, Tohai Cold Girl, began serialization on September 28, 2021, and has five volumes as of September 2023.
Additionally, a live-action film adaptation directed and written by Yuichi Onuma premiered in Japanese theaters on May 18, 2013, featuring Goki Maeda, Hidekazu Ichinose, and Yasukaze Motomiya.
