On January 9, 2024, the team of Dorohedoro revealed that a new streaming series, a sequel to Dorohedoro, is in the works. Studio MAPPA will be producing the series, and they even gave us a glimpse with a teaser visual.
Dorohedoro, which means “Mud-sludge” in Japanese, is a manga written and illustrated by Q Hayashida. The manga was serialized in different magazines from November 2000 to September 2018, and it has a total of 23 volumes.
The Dorohedoro anime got nominated for the 2021 5th Crunchyroll Anime Awards. Lynzee Loveridge from Anime News Network really liked the story, animation, and characters. She said, “Dorohedoro found the perfect mix of mystery, crazy violence, and humor in one awesome package. The background art, especially around En’s mansion and the Sorcerer’s world, is fantastic, with lots of details that make it both beautiful and kinda scary. The characters are funny and well-developed, and the world is pretty creepy. Kambole Campbell from Thrillist added, Dorohedoro grabs your attention with its weird story and creepy world, but what makes it stick is the awesome characters and all the unexpected twists.
The first TV anime adaptation of Dorohedoro was announced in November 2018 by Shogakukan’s Monthly Shōnen Sunday. It was made by MAPPA and directed by Yuichiro Hayashi. The series had 12 episodes that aired from January 12 to March 29, 2020, on Tokyo MX. Additionally, six short episodes were released as an original video animation (OVA) bundled with the second Blu-ray release on June 17, 2020. Dorohedoro became available on Netflix outside of Japan on May 28, 2020. The six short episodes were later combined into one long episode labeled as episode 13 and released on Netflix on October 15, 2020.
Dorohedoro is an action horror story set in a dark and chaotic place called Hole, where strong people harm the weak, and death is common. This realm lacks law and ethics, serving as a testing ground for magic users who treat Hole’s residents like insects. The powerless inhabitants suffer violence and experiments without mercy.
Among them, Kaiman, a more reptilian than human figure, seeks answers, armed with bayonets and immunity to magic. His appearance is cursed, and nightmares haunt him, but he believes magic users hold the key to restoring his life. Despite the challenges, Kaiman is determined, and his ally Nikaidou, who runs the Hungry Bug restaurant, supports him.
Dorohedoro presents a dark world filled with death and chaos, yet it skillfully incorporates humor and lighthearted moments. The story follows the lives of Hole’s residents, offering a unique and darkly imaginative world that may not be suitable for those easily disturbed.
