Every week I tell myself I’m ready for Re:Zero, and every week Re:Zero proves me wrong. Episode 15 of Season 4 — “The Earnest Star” (一途な星) — is titled after Shaula, and that tells you everything: after weeks of her being the tower’s comic-relief sniper with a streak of mystery, this is the episode where she becomes the emotional center of the whole arc. Fans in Japan were rating it above 9/10 within hours, and having just watched it, I get it.
Here’s the episode in three movements, because honestly, that’s how it’s built.
Movement One: The Roid Problem
The episode opens directly on last week’s cliffhanger: Julius and the others staring down Reid Astrea — who is Roy Alphard, the fused leftover of a Gluttony sibling who ate something too big for him. The fandom has settled on “Roid” as shorthand, and this episode is where the name earns its place.
The fight itself is brief by Re:Zero standards, and that’s a compliment — the tower is crumbling around it, the animation stays gorgeous in the chaos, and Roid remains the most unsettling antagonist of the season: the sword saint’s body moving with a Sin Archbishop’s grin. And then, in the episode’s coldest beat, Reid kills Subaru too. The sequence is staged so matter-of-factly that it took me a second to process what had just happened — which is exactly the effect this show goes for.
Death, of course, is a currency Subaru spends freely. Return by Death fires, and the episode pivots from battlefield to something much quieter.
Movement Two: The Earnest Star
This is the part people will remember from this season. After the reset, Subaru goes to meet Shaula on the tower balcony, and the episode gives her the scene she’s been owed since she appeared: a real, unhurried conversation about devotion, waiting, and what it means to keep loving someone across centuries. No jokes, no deflection — just Shaula.
Fairouz Ai’s performance here is being called her best work as a voice actor, and I won’t argue. The soundtrack carries the scene without ever drowning it, the storyboarding stays patient, and by the end of it, the episode title stops being a label and becomes a knife.
Because the payoff is this: Subaru gives his life to save Shaula. Deliberately. On-screen. The title card for “The Earnest Star” drops right after his sacrifice — one of those Re:Zero title-card placements that functions as punctuation on an emotional sentence. He dies so she doesn’t have to, returns by Death resets the board, and the episode walks into its final movement with your guard completely down.
Movement Three: The Counts Begin
And then the strategy shifts. If you read our breakdown of episode 14’s loop ledger, you know Subaru’s new approach to this arc: stop panicking, start accounting. Episode 15 formalizes it. The final stretch of the episode begins the Counts — Subaru’s methodical, numbered assault on the Roid problem, loop after loop, treating his own deaths as data points instead of tragedies.
It’s the coldest and most Subaru thing imaginable: he mourns in one movement and starts counting in the next. If the Counts play out the way source readers know they can, the remaining episodes of this arc are going to be an absolute gauntlet.
Why this episode matters
Strip away the hype and “The Earnest Star” does two things the Recapture Arc needed. First, it pays off Shaula — a character who could have stayed a joke instead becomes the reason the arc’s middle section hits as hard as it does. Second, it reframes Subaru’s deaths one more time: from trauma, to tool, to arithmetic. The show has spent four seasons teaching us to flinch at Return by Death. Now it’s asking us to watch him schedule it.
Four episodes remain — the finale lands September 30 — and with the Counts underway, the back half of this arc is officially in endgame mode.
