Blue Box Season 2 Episode 1 Recap: The Date, Matsuoka, and Yumeka’s Arrival

Blue Box Season 2 Episode 1 Recap: The Date, Matsuoka, and Yumeka’s Arrival

Full spoilers for Blue Box Season 2, Episode 1, “Déjà Vu.”

After 25 episodes of pining and one brutal rejection, Season 2 opens exactly where the finale left us: Taiki finally asked Chinatsu to go shopping for sportswear, and she said yes — and added a café stop herself. For a boy who spent a year borrowing her mornings, this is the closest thing to a real date he has ever had. Naturally, the universe spends the entire episode trying to ruin it.

The Shop Date That Keeps Getting Read Wrong

Taiki and Chinatsu finally on their date — Blue Box Season 2 Episode 1

It starts soft: browsing tracksuits, Taiki imagining how each one would look on her, Chinatsu picking one out for him. Then a classmate shows up, asks if the girl in the changing room is Hina — and Chinatsu overhears everything through the curtain. She goes quiet, puts back the T-shirt she liked, and suddenly the outing stops feeling like it belongs only to them. It is a wordless, monumental beat for her side of the story: Chinatsu is now fully aware of what Taiki means to her, and what he might still mean to someone else.

Matsuoka, the Café Villain

At the café they run into Matsuoka, the smug senior basketball player every fan already hates. He needles Taiki about whether a guy with a floundering badminton season has any business dating, then invites Chinatsu to a college basketball game — and the agonizing part is that Taiki almost lets it happen. Not because he is weak, but because he genuinely will not put his feelings above her growth as an athlete. He trudges toward the station alone, regrets already stacking… and then Chinatsu appears beside him. She chose him. Take that, Matsuoka.

The Rooftop — and the Confession That Died

What follows is the best stretch of the episode: the two of them at a sunset observation deck packed with couples (a wonderfully realistic touch), Taiki giving her the jacket he bought, and a callback to their very first meeting — the scarf. Chinatsu admits she never found his gesture creepy back then, even when she barely knew him. Taiki, finally full of courage, starts to say the thing he has swallowed for an entire year… and Yumeka Kido appears.

Who Is Yumeka Kido?

Chinatsu’s former mini-basketball teammate — the better player when they were kids, the one who was there when Chinatsu fell in love with the game. Now sharp-eyed, smug, and confrontational, Yumeka takes one look at Chinatsu on a date and assumes the worst: that Chinatsu quit basketball, just like she did. “Romance is what you pick when you’re done competing.” It is a mean, cutting line to end on — Taiki’s confession dies in his mouth, and nothing is resolved. Manga readers know: Yumeka is the door into Chinatsu’s backstory, and the part of the story where she finally gets to be the active lead.

Verdict

A premiere that trades matches for tension and nails every beat of it: gorgeous boards, patient small moments, an honestly annoying villain, and a cliffhanger that guarantees next Sunday. New episodes weekly on Netflix, Sundays — we will cover every one. See the full Fall 2026 schedule for everything else airing.
