The Apothecary Diaries Season 3 Episode 1 Recap: Locusts, a Hooded Woman, and the Famine Nobody Sees Coming

Full spoilers for The Apothecary Diaries Season 3, Episode 1.

Maomao is back — and within three minutes, the season shows you exactly what kind of story it’s telling this time. We open on farmland that locusts have already stripped to dust: a hungry baby crying, a farmer kneeling in his ruined field with the remains pouring through his fingers. Then a hooded woman appears and offers him “medicine that will heal his heart and erase all your worldly pains.” The smile she gives him when he reaches for it is the single most chilling frame of the episode. Remember her. She matters.

The Empress, the Two Princes, and a Very Bad Time for a Famine

Maomao in The Apothecary Diaries Season 3 episode 1

While the capital celebrates Gyokuyou’s rise from Consort to Empress — two new princes, one hers, one Lihua’s — not everyone is thrilled the Emperor made a foreign woman from the West his legal wife. Jinshi and Gaoshun, meanwhile, are staring at reports of a locust plague and doing the political math out loud: if disaster strikes the empire right now, the people will call it divine punishment for wiping out the Shi Clan, and the Emperor takes the blame. It’s a genuinely uncomfortable bind, and the show doesn’t sugarcoat it.

Maomao’s Quiet Life Lasts About Ten Minutes

Down in the pleasure district, Maomao is living the slow life: looking after Chou-u (the Shi Clan child who came back from death without his memories) and puttering around the Verdigris House. The Madame offers her and Chou-u a “free” meal and a bath — and of course nothing with the Madame is ever free. The meal is a heaping pile of cooked locusts. The debate over how disgusting they are is classic Apothecary comedy… until Maomao notices the locusts are hollow and tasteless, and her brain quietly starts turning. A strange detail, ignored by everyone else, becoming an investigation. Some things never change, and thank god.

The Bookshop Thread That Ties Everything Together

Out buying incense, Maomao stops at a bookshop and finds a volume on birds — identical to the books she saw while imprisoned and forced to work on an immortality potion for Lady Shi. Someone smuggled the stronghold’s library out and is selling it for profit. She takes the lead to Lihaku, they track the seller down — and it’s the same guard who oversaw her imprisonment, the one who told her to leave before the stronghold blew up. And here’s the kicker: he reveals the apothecary held prisoner before Maomao wasn’t just working on immortality. He was studying locusts. He knew something was coming.

Verdict: A Slow Burn With a Powder Keg Under It

No big reveal, no confrontation, no mystery wrapped before the credits — this is deliberately the first piece of a much larger picture: famine, a mysterious woman distributing “medicine,” and an empire one bad harvest away from calling its Emperor cursed. If Season 2 was the palace drama, Season 3 is shaping up to be the empire-scale crisis, with the expedition West (and the rumored immortal White Lady) waiting in the wings. The premiere trusts you to sit with the discomfort. Let it.
