One Piece episode 1179, “One Do-or-Die Second — Gaban vs. the Knights of God” (決死の一秒 ギャバンVS神の騎士団), airs today. Here’s when it drops, where we left the battlefield, and why the title is hiding the biggest shift of the arc.

Where we left Elbaf
Episode 1178 was a massacre with a light at the end. Gunko’s Aro Aro no Mi kept making the impossible look easy — Brook went down, Colon stayed a hostage, and Somers was beating Saul with his own club while Robin’s cleverest plays bounced off regeneration that seemed absolute. Every fight the Straw Hats picked, they lost.
Then Scopper Gaban arrived and did the one thing nobody had managed: he hurt Somers and it stuck. The severed arm did not grow back. For an arc built on unkillable holy enemies, a Knight that can bleed is the whole board flipping — which is exactly why episode 1179 isn’t just another skirmish.
Who Gaban actually is (for the newer fans)
If you joined during Wano or Egghead: Scopper Gaban is the third legend of the Roger Pirates — the man mentioned in the same breath as Roger and Rayleigh, “Roger’s left arm.” He’s been quietly living in Elbaf, and the show has been saving him. His Mountain Eater is the kind of move that gets named in legend recaps for decades. He is the last person the Knights of God expected to deal with.
What “One Do-or-Die Second” tells us
Titles in this arc don’t exaggerate. A single second framing means Gaban isn’t planning a war of attrition against multiple Knights — he’s loading everything into one strike while the children are still on the board. Ronja and the young giants are still leverage, Elbaf’s whole history is still hostage, and Somers now knows something about himself he didn’t five minutes ago: he can be cut. Watch what that fear does to a man who thought he was a god.
The wildcards
Robin is still in play and smarter than anyone credits. Gunko still holds Colon. And the question the preview refuses to answer: does Gaban stand completely alone, or do the giants — and whichever Straw Hats can still stand — finally get to hit back at the same moment?
The verdict
My expectation: this is the episode Elbaf stops being a rout. Gaban betting a whole episode’s title on one second screams a highlight-reel strike with real cost — the Knights are not going down clean, and someone on the good side is paying for that second. Either way, after months of the Straw Hats eating losses, tonight One Piece finally lets the legend swing.
