Gunko finds the one thing that matters
Then the fight stops being about strength. Gunko works out the one thing nobody in Elbaf had connected: Colon is Gaban’s son. With the boy in her grip and the school and library burning, she does the math out loud — the legend’s power means nothing if his kid is the price.
The actual do-or-die second
This is the scene the title was hiding. Gaban’s Observation Haki tells him the truth nobody wants to hear: he cannot keep fighting and guarantee Colon’s life. Not “might not” — cannot. So the man who just carved up a Knight of God drops his axes, drops the win, and gives himself up. A short flashback to Colon’s birth lands the emotional weight, and honestly — watching a living legend choose his son over the battle is the hardest One Piece has hit all cour.
Gunko remembers Brook
Then the episode twists the knife somewhere new. Colon’s crying triggers something broken open inside Gunko — she suddenly remembers Brook. And Brook, staring back, recognizes a face from his own long-buried past. The show refuses to explain the connection, which is exactly why it works: a mystery this personal hits different from another power reveal.
And then Imu arrives
Just as Gunko moves toward Brook — the episode ends the only way it could escalate: Imu takes control of Gunko’s body. No warning, no fight, no consent. The ruler of the world simply borrows a Knight, and the final frame makes clear Elbaf is not a side operation to the World Government — the giants matter to whatever Imu is planning, and we are out of depth.
The verdict
This is a 9/10 episode, and the point isn’t the number — it’s how it earns it. One Piece sold us the legend, made the legend kneel for love, and then flipped the entire board with Imu in the last sixty seconds. A setup episode that lands like a gut-punch is rarer than a good fight, and this is both.
