The sequel anime project for the “Rascal Does Not Dream” light novel series has exciting news! The “University Student Arc” is officially getting a new anime adaptation. While the announcement didn’t reveal the specific type of anime, we are eager for more details. In addition, the screenings of “Rascal Does Not Dream of a Knapsack Kid” in Japan include a special promotional video after the credits, adding to the anticipation.
Rascal Does Not Dream is a Japanese light novel series written by Hajime Kamoshida and illustrated by Kēji Mizoguchi. The series, consisting of thirteen volumes published by ASCII Media Works since April 2014, also has a manga adaptation by Tsugumi Nanamiya in Dengeki G’s Comic since December 2015. The anime TV series, titled “Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai,” aired from October to December 2018, covering the first five volumes. It continued with an anime film, “Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dreaming Girl,” adapting volumes six and seven, premiered in June 2019. Another film, “Rascal Does Not Dream of a Sister Venturing Out,” based on volume eight, premiered in June 2023.
The third film, “Rascal Does Not Dream of a Knapsack Kid,” adapting volume nine, is set to release in December 2023. The 13-episode anime series, which aired from October 4 to December 27, 2018, was animated by CloverWorks and directed by Sōichi Masui, with music by the band Fox Capture Plan. The series’ opening theme, “Kimi no Sei,” and ending theme, “Fukashigi no Karte,” were performed by the Peggies and Asami Seto, Yurika Kubo, Nao Tōyama, Atsumi Tanezaki, Maaya Uchida, and Inori Minase, respectively. Aniplex of America licensed and streamed the series, releasing a complete Blu-ray set in November 2019.
The sequel, announced during the Aniplex Online Fest in September 2022, consists of two films: “Rascal Does Not Dream of a Sister Venturing Out,” released on June 23, 2023, and “Rascal Does Not Dream of a Knapsack Kid,” which premiered on December 1, 2023, retaining the main staff and cast from the previous anime adaptation.
Rascal Does Not Dream is an anime series about Sakuta Azusagawa, a high school student whose life takes an unexpected turn when he meets Mai Sakurajima, a teenage actress dressed as a bunny girl. Strangely, no one else in the library notices Mai except Sakuta. Intrigued by this, Sakuta learns about “Adolescence Syndrome,” a phenomenon where certain people become invisible to others. Determined to solve this mystery, Sakuta gets closer to Mai and encounters other girls with the same syndrome. The story revolves around Sakuta’s efforts to understand and help these girls with their unique challenges.
