Code Geass, often called Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion, is a popular Japanese anime series created by Sunrise. Directed by Gorō Taniguchi and written by Ichirō Ōkouchi, the show features original character designs by Clamp. The story unfolds in an alternate timeline and follows Lelouch Lamperouge, an exiled prince who gains the “power of absolute obedience” called Geass from a mysterious woman named C.C. Using this supernatural ability, Lelouch leads a rebellion against the Holy Britannian Empire, engaging in intense mecha battles.
Originally aired in Japan from October 2006 to July 2007, Code Geass received widespread acclaim. Its sequel, Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2, followed with a simulcast in 2008. The franchise expanded into manga, light novels, and a film trilogy titled Initiation, Transgression, and Glorification, released between 2017 and 2018. A new film, Code Geass Lelouch of the Resurrection, continued the story in an alternate universe and hit theaters in February 2019. Additionally, Code Geass: Z of the Recapture, a series set in the same alternate universe, was unveiled in December 2020 as part of a 10-year plan.
Code Geass gained international success, with English-dubbed versions airing on Adult Swim in the United States. Bandai Entertainment handled the English release of most franchise parts. The anime’s success is evident in its sales, awards at prestigious events, and critical acclaim for its captivating story, voice acting, character conflicts, and moral dilemmas.
