Rurouni Kenshin new anime series to premiere in July 2023
Good news for all Rurouni Kenshin lovers out there! Be prepared for an action-packed summer in 2023, as the highly anticipated Rurouni Kenshin – Meiji Kenkaku Romantan finally has a confirmed premiere date to be on 7th July.
Produced by Aniplex and Shueisha, this series is based on the popular manga and features historical and martial arts themes that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The show falls under the shounen demographic, making it perfect for young audiences who love action and romance.
The talented Hideyo Yamamoto directs the series, with Hideyuki Kurata handling series composition, and Terumi Nishii taking care of character design. Yu Takami, known for “High is a ladder,” is in charge of the music.

A Brief History of Rurouni Kenshin: From Manga to Anime and Beyond
For those who are not familiar with the series, you gotta know that Rurouni Kenshin is a manga series created by Nobuhiro Watsuki. The story takes place during the Meiji period in Japan, following the journey of Kenshin Himura, a former assassin known as Hitokiri Battosai. After his past, Kenshin wanders as a swordsman who vows never to kill again and protects the people of Japan. Watsuki wrote the series to stand out from other shōnen manga at the time, with themes revolving around atonement, peace, and romance.
The manga was serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine from 1994 to 1999, with a total of 28 tankōbon volumes. It was later reprinted into 22 kanzenban volumes. The manga was adapted into an anime television series, which aired from 1996 to 1998. Two series of original video animations (OVAs) were also produced. The franchise has also expanded into art and guidebooks, light novels, and video games.
A live-action film adaptation was released from 2012 to 2021, and a new anime series adaptation by Liden Films is set to premiere in July 2023. The manga has been released in North America by Viz Media and has sold over 72 million copies worldwide as of 2019. The series has received critical acclaim for its characters and historical setting. A direct sequel, Rurouni Kenshin: The Hokkaido Arc, was started in 2017.
