Magical Angel Creamy Mami and Fairy Princess Minky Momo Anime Announce Anniversary Collab

Two iconic magical girl anime series, Magical Angel Creamy Mami and Fairy Princess Minky Momo, are celebrating their legacies through a special anniversary collaboration. First crossing paths in a 1985 featurette airing alongside their respective theatrical films, the beloved magical heroines will reunite in a wide-ranging event in 2025. The collaboration, dubbed the “MamiMomo” project, marks 40 years since their joint screen appearance and comes with new content, themed cafés, pop-up shops, and exclusive merchandise.

A Reunion Four Decades in the Making

The 2025 Magical Angel Creamy Mami and Fairy Princess Minky Momo anime collaboration brings together two of the most recognizable magical girls in anime history. The event was officially announced along with the release of new key visual artwork created by renowned animator Hiroshi Watanabe, who previously served as an animator on the original Fairy Princess Minky Momo series. The artwork depicts Creamy Mami, the teen pop idol alter ego of Yuu Morisawa, standing confidently alongside Momo in her original 1982 design. Each character wields her signature magical artifact, reinforcing their iconic status among classic anime fans.

This visual not only serves as a tribute to the characters’ enduring popularity but also forms the foundation for a teaser video promoting the event activities planned throughout the year.

Studio Pierrot’s Enduring Legacy with Magical Angel Creamy Mami

Magical Angel Creamy Mami was the first entry in Studio Pierrot’s celebrated lineup of magical girl series. Airing from July 1983 to June 1984, the anime follows 10-year-old Yuu Morisawa who gains magical powers and transforms into the 16-year-old idol Creamy Mami. The series became a trendsetter in fusing idol culture with magical girl tropes. Takako Ohta, a real-life idol singer who debuted in the role of Yuu, lent her voice and songs to the series, anchoring its musical identity and boosting its commercial appeal. The show was also notable for its innovative use of OVA episodes and cross-media marketing.

Studio Pierrot went on to produce three more annual magical girl shows: Magical Fairy Persia (1984), Magic Star Magical Emi (1985), and Magical Idol Pastel Yumi (1986), all benefiting from the groundwork laid by Creamy Mami.

Fairy Princess Minky Momo: Two Generations of Magic

Fairy Princess Minky Momo, another classic in the magical girl genre, debuted in 1982 with its first series and returned with a second series in 1991. The anime tells the story of Momo, a magical princess from the sky kingdom of Fenarinarsa. Sent to Earth to revive humanity’s waning dreams, Momo uses her transformative abilities and emotional insight to inspire hope and belief. Her companions, magical creatures who assist her on her quest, serve both narrative and comedic purposes, enriching the show’s appeal to younger audiences.

The series was produced by Ashi Productions (now known as Production Reed) in collaboration with Yomiko Advertising and Nippon Television. Like Creamy Mami, Minky Momo embraced a multimedia approach, including music albums, novels, and toys. The anime stands out for its willingness to address mature themes such as loss and resilience, particularly in its later episodes.

As of 2024, both Minky Momo series are officially available for streaming on Crunchyroll. The platform describes the series as a story about restoring hope through dreams, with Momo striving to save her fading homeland in the sky by rekindling the human spirit on Earth.

MamiMomo Collaboration Events and Merchandise

The announcement of the anniversary collaboration between Magical Angel Creamy Mami and Fairy Princess Minky Momo came with news of a wide array of entertainment and promotional activities. Fans can look forward to:

  • Pop-up shops featuring exclusive merchandise and character-themed goods
  • Collaborative cafés in select cities offering themed food and decor inspired by both series
  • Digital video content, including the teaser trailer utilizing Hiroshi Watanabe’s new visual

Additional plans have been teased to include content “beyond the scope of the original shows,” although no specific information about new episodes or animation projects has been confirmed yet.

Cast, Staff, and Platforms

While no new anime series or episodes have been announced as part of the anniversary project as of yet, key legacy staff remain central to the promotional efforts. Takako Ohta, the original voice actress and singer for Creamy Mami, has continued lending her voice and music to promotional campaigns and VTuber collaborations in recent years. Her involvement with the franchise has played a significant role in its continued popularity.

Animator Hiroshi Watanabe, a veteran of Minky Momo and other projects from Ashi Productions, returned to illustrate the new collaboration visual. His work is widely respected for staying true to the aesthetic of early 80s magical girl anime while also modernizing elements for new audiences.

Both original anime series remain accessible to international audiences through Crunchyroll, which currently offers streaming for Fairy Princess Minky Momo and maintains media partnerships related to Creamy Mami.

Looking Ahead

With the “MamiMomo” collaboration now underway, longtime anime fans and new audiences alike have a unique opportunity to experience nostalgic content in a fresh format. The partnership between Magical Angel Creamy Mami and Fairy Princess Minky Momo brings together two of the genre’s most influential characters in a multi-generational celebration of magical girl history. The event promises to be both a tribute and a reminder of the creativity and optimism at the heart of these beloved stories.
