Isekai Munchkin: HP1 no Mama de Saikyou Saisoku Dungeon Kouryaku Gets Anime Adaptation
Isekai Munchkin: HP1 no Mama de Saikyou Saisoku Dungeon Kouryaku—also known as Otherworldly Munchkin: Let’s Speedrun the Dungeon with Only 1 HP!—is officially getting an anime adaptation. Based on the manga by Yuu Shimizu and illustrated by Ryo Aogiri, this series mixes humor, action, and fantasy in a unique story about Yukito Kirihara, a high school gamer reincarnated with only 1 HP and a knack for bending the rules. A teaser visual dropped, showing Yukito alongside his companion Charlotte, ready for their wild new world.
The story kicks off when Yukito, a high schooler who loves tabletop role-playing games (TRPGs), suddenly dies after being attacked by a strange creature. He’s reborn in Everworld, another dimension, thanks to the goddess Nephilia. Yukito quickly finds out that his little sister Sana has also been sent to this world, so he sets out to find her—except there’s one huge challenge: he’s stuck with only 1 HP. Armed with the “World Master’s Guide” that he managed to snag from Nephilia, Yukito uses all the tricks he knows from gaming to survive brutal dungeons and dodge monsters, all while desperately clinging to his single point of health.
The manga, which has been running in Kodansha’s Suiyōbi no Sirius since 2019, has steadily gained fans who love quirky isekai stories with a twist. With 11 volumes already out, the series is available digitally in English under the title Otherworldly Munchkin: Let’s Speedrun the Dungeon with Only 1 HP! Kodansha USA started releasing it in English back in 2020, and fans can get the latest, Volume 11, on November 8, 2024.
Who’s Making the Isekai Munchkin Anime series?
The Isekai Munchkin anime is being directed by Mamoru Yokota, known for his work on Kinnikuman: The Perfect Superhuman Ancestor Arc. Animation will be handled by Studio Durandal, a newer animation studio that started in 2022. Yokota shared how much this project means to him, saying, “I thought, ‘I’ll spend the rest of my life making a work that will leave my name behind,’ so I have no choice but to put all my effort into Munchkin!” Fans got a sneak peek at the characters with the teaser visual, giving us a glimpse into the magic and action Yukito will face in Everworld.
Both the author, Yuu Shimizu, and the illustrator, Ryo Aogiri, are thrilled about the adaptation. Aogiri shared his excitement, saying, “I’ve always dreamed of Isekai Munchkin being made into an anime. When my editor told me, ‘It’s been decided,’ I was so surprised I kept asking, ‘Seriously?’ I remember that conversation so clearly!” Shimizu described the series as “a work filled with all the fun memories of the TRPG I played in my school days.”
